How to Disable AI Overview in Apple Safari
The complete, honest guide for Safari users on macOS, iPhone, and iPad.
Unlike Chrome and Firefox, Apple Safari hardcodes its search engine list to Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Ecosia. Safari does not natively allow adding custom search engine URLs. Do not waste time looking for a "custom search engine" button in Safari preferences—it doesn't exist.
3 Working Solutions for Safari Users:
Solution 1: Safari Web Extension (Most Seamless)
Install a lightweight Safari extension (such as Userscripts for Safari or StopTheMadness) that automatically appends &udm=14 or injects CSS to hide the AI Overview element on Google searches.
Solution 2: Use the Clean Google Bookmarklet
Drag this button to your Safari Favorites bar. Whenever you find yourself on a Google results page cluttered with AI Overview, click the bookmarklet to refresh the page in pure Web mode:
Solution 3: Try Orion Browser (Same WebKit engine as Safari)
If you want the battery life and speed of Safari with full freedom to customize search engines and run Chrome extensions, check out Orion by Kagi.
